Rails to nowhere, the Ripley Branch

The Ripley Branch of the Midland Railway ran from a junction south of Little Eaton to Ripley, serving a cluster of collieries and ironworks around Denby. It was lifted between Denby and Ripley in the 1980s, and has now been completely abandoned.

It was preceded as far as Denby by the Little Eaton Gangway, an early horse-drawn waggonway. Hardly any evidence of this has survived, apart from some vague alignnments around Denby.
